  The ritual complications of our courtesy, the persistence of classical Humanism, our fondness for closed poetic forms, our love for geometry, in the decorative arts and for design and composition in painting, the poverty of our Romantic art compared with the excellence of our Baroque art, the formalism of our political institutions, and, finally, our dangerous inclination toward formalism.
